Aluminum Recycling in the Bathroom

IMG_20131014_095901_220According to the EPA, only 50.7 percent of aluminum was recycled in 2009. There is so much more that can be recycled throughout your house. This week, we are going to focus on the aluminum and steel recyclables that can be found in your bathroom. Keep reading for more information!

You may not have realized that so many items that you use in your bathroom are recyclable. Not including paper and plastic products, many aluminum and steel containers can be recycled. Here are some of the times that you may not have realized can be tossed in your recycle bin:

  • Hairspray
  • Air Freshener
  • Dry Shampoo
  • Bathroom Cleaner
  • Spray Tan Containers
  • Sun Screen Cans
  • Shaving Cream Cans
  • And Many More

IMG_20131014_100124_796These are just a few of the aluminum products you may have in your bathroom that may be tossed in your recycle bin. Be sure that they are empty before disposing of them though! On top of these, there are numerous paper, cardboard and plastic products in your bathroom that may also be recyclable.

  1. I am interested in knowing what is meant by “empty” when talking about pressurized spray cans. Does that mean simply that there is no more pressure inside the can?

    • Correct. For aerosol cans, please ensure that no more pressure is inside the can. For example, with an air freshener can, please ensure that there is no more air freshener being released from the can.   2. On plastic spray bottles can the sprayer part be recycled and the plastic caps on catsup, dish soap and detergent bottles, also?

    • Many of these types of lids or sprayers are actually a different type of plastic than the bottle. When going through our recycling stream, they will end up contaminating the plastics when they are sorted. In order to ensure that these items do not contaminate the final product, please throw these items in your trash can. -Penn Waste
